Back in 1968 I converted my Triumph Twin to a hardtail by the same method. I used steel bar stock and had the links chromed. My rear suspension then became the air in the rear tire and the compressibility in the custom Bates seat! I didn't think it was uncomfortable at all...I just avoided potholes! Today I measured the vertical space between my rear tire and inside the fender, and it was 4 inches without a rider. If your links drop the Savage 4 inches, then I don't see any clearance!
I was thinking of dropping mine about 2-1/2 inches, to allow for a future 140/90-15 tire. Send me a picture of your links anyway!
